Internationalising your marketplace: 3 secrets to success

Evaluate the maturity of foreign countries

Check how likely it is that your idea will work based on the type of products you offer.  

Analyse the competition

A country may be mature in its purchases from foreign markets without constituting a goldmine for yours. This is due to an existing concentration of similar markets. It's therefore important to carry out competitive analysis to ensure that there is still space in the market for your business.  

Reassure your buyers

Confronted with Internet scams and the fear of not receiving their parcel on time, foreign consumers can prove wary of platforms that they aren't familiar with. You must therefore take time to reassure them and eliminate factors that will deter them from making a purchase.  

  • Your website content must be correctly translated. To do this, avoid online translations and contract a professional translator to translate your static pages to preserve the subtleties of each language.
  • Similarly, it's important to take cultural differences for each country into account when designing your website and adding images.
  • Use good keywords for SEO purposes and to ensure your users understand your content.
  • Clearly provide your users with an email address or a local telephone number. This will enable buyers and customers to contact you. An absence of contact details can deter people from making a purchase.
  • Request local certifications to confirm the quality of your website and its payment system.

 

Regardless of all this, marketplaces have a major advantage: foreign third-party vendors will already be familiar with the market. This means you can afford to make less effort than a typical e-commerce site.
